Step 1: Gather Your Toilet Rolls

A dozen should do, for starters. Arrange these cylinders in a tray. If you’re wondering why we’re using toilet rolls, it’s because they decompose naturally, and in the process, provide extra nutrients to the plants. Plus, they help us reduce waste — a double win!

Step 2: Fill ‘Em Up

Fill each roll with John Innes seed compost, the perfect mix for our Sweet Pea seeds. This compost strikes a balance between moisture retention and air circulation, both vital for seed germination.

Step 3: Prepare the Sweet Pea Seeds

Sweet Pea seeds need a bit of preparation before planting. To break their dormancy and kick-start the germination process, soak the seeds overnight. You’ll notice they’ll swell up and almost double in size — a clear sign they’re ready to be planted.

Step 4: Time to Plant

Now comes the moment we’ve all been waiting for — sowing the seeds. Place one pre-soaked Sweet Pea seed into each toilet roll tube and push it in gently. Cover it with compost, and then water them gently.

Step 5: Warm and Cosy

Lastly, find a warm spot for your newly planted seeds. Not too hot, mind you — just comfortably warm. In a couple of weeks, you’ll start to see the first signs of your Sweet Pea seedlings.

By following these steps, not only have you managed to reuse something that would otherwise end up in the bin, but you’ve also given life to a new plant. And that, dear readers, is the magic of gardening!
